Etymologically “WADI” is a Gujarati word that means a small orchard that is actually a tree based farming system consisting of fruit trees suitable to the local area. Two or more tree crops are selected in a typical WADI project of NABARD to minimize biological and marketing risks.
This Tribal Development Program of NABARD aims at improvement of socio-economic conditions of tribal people in remote areas through providing them livelihood in the form of income and basic necessities like fuel wood, timber and cattle fodder. The program will assist tribal families in Jhumpaijela block of Shipaijala district of Tripura through providing assistance in developing orchards of arecanut and orange through irrigation resources and creating their institution for sustaining the development program. It is expected that in five years’ time a poor village of 200 families can convert a fallow and unutilized land into an orchard of 200 acre producing hundreds of tons of fruits and nuts.
